Do angels fly?

Luke's question tonight after I sang "Close to You" for a lullaby in
Brian & Barbara's guest bed in Redding.

On the day that you were born
the angels got together
And decided they would make a dream come true....

"Yes," I said. What other answer to give?

"Okay," he said, business-like and satisfied, filing that info away. Then this: "Good night, Mommy. Have sweet dreams." And almost instantly sleeping.

"Boyhood." All of it. But I'm thinking of when Mason, before going to sleep, verifies with his dad that there is no real magic in the world, no actual elves "at this moment."

Luke and Halina at Cull Canyon last week, where halina put all her swim lesson pieces together for the first time.

Dancing at Fourth of July

This was the most exercise I'd gotten in a while and so much fun. The live band was good. While the rest of us were picnicking, Halina even hit the dance "floor" by herself a few times. Then we watched fireworks with a grassy hillside of people and glow sticks all around us. I love the everybody's-here feeling of Fourth of July.

Luke's birthday cake

Luke turned four on Sunday. We had a party in a meadow near redwoods with a few preschool friends and their families. It was a perfect, warm day with a gentle breeze and ladybugs fluttering around. I'll share some pictures later, when I get them off my other camera.

This year Luke asked for a butterfly cake. Here's what we came up with. The frosting has homemade strawberry syrup in it to make it pink. Halina helped make lots of key decisions about the cake and added all the pink, red, and blue m&m parts.

We had a wonderful time celebrating the boy we love most in the whole world.
